As environmental concerns grow increasingly pressing and the nation calls for energy conservation and emissions reduction, finding alternatives to plastic has become a critical issue. For example, at this year’s Two Sessions, Hu Jiqiang, a deputy to the National People’s Congress and chairman of Kangnaibe Group, raised a question during the fourth group discussion of the Zhejiang delegation: “Have you ever considered what kind of changes would occur in our environment if many everyday items could be replaced by bamboo?”

As environmental concerns grow increasingly pressing and the nation calls for energy conservation and emissions reduction, finding alternatives to plastics has become a critical issue. For example, at this year’s Two Sessions, Hu Jiqiang, a deputy to the National People’s Congress and chairman of Kangnaibe Group, raised a question during the fourth panel discussion of the Zhejiang delegation: “Have you ever considered what kind of changes would occur in the environment if many everyday items could be replaced by bamboo?”

Bamboo can be harvested and regrow every year, making it a sustainable resource. It is widely distributed across more than 20 provinces nationwide, with vast reserves. In numerous sectors—including everyday consumer goods and packaging—bamboo can replace plastic products. To date, over 100 product lines and tens of thousands of varieties have been developed.

Moreover, with advances in manufacturing technologies and processes, bamboo is no longer limited to replacing plastic products; it can also substitute for traditional materials such as metal and cement. For example, bamboo‑wrapped composite materials are made primarily from fast‑growing, renewable, and recyclable bamboo. Breakthroughs in bamboo‑wrapped composite technology have made it possible to replace steel, cement, plastic, and glass with bamboo‑based products across a wide range of applications, yielding substantial carbon‑reduction benefits.

According to available data, China currently has an annual harvest of approximately 150 million tons of bamboo, of which 40 million tons are already in use, leaving 110 million tons underutilized. If all this bamboo were processed into bamboo‑wrapped composite materials to replace steel and concrete, it could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 170 million tons per year—equivalent to 1.7% of China’s current annual carbon footprint. Research indicates that one hectare of moso bamboo sequesters 5.09 tons of carbon annually, 1.46 times the amount sequestered by Chinese fir and 1.33 times that of tropical rainforests.


Meanwhile, single-use plastic tableware is among the most commonly encountered plastic products in our daily lives. With the rapid growth of the food-delivery industry, the consumption of such disposables has surged accordingly. Media reports have even claimed that “a single delivery bag could cover West Lake in just fifteen days” and that “the takeaway containers discarded in one day could pile up to form more than 330 Mount Everests.” If these estimates hold true, by 2020, the volume of takeout waste had grown to the point where “takeout bags could cover West Lake in less than three days,” and “takeout containers could stack into a mountain as tall as 770 Mount Everests in a single day.”

Furthermore, media reports—based on interviews, data analysis, and estimations—have found that in 2020, plastic waste from food delivery nationwide weighed approximately 578,000 to 1.6 million tons. Rendering this 1.6 million tons of plastic waste harmless would cost roughly 2.45 billion yuan, a cost that would ultimately be borne by each of us through our taxes and fees.

The environmental pollution caused by plastic products is well known. According to China’s 2021 statistics on urban solid waste management, the current disposal methods for single-use food containers still rely primarily on landfill (52%) and incineration (45%). Simple landfilling allows large numbers of bacteria to persist on discarded plastic containers, leading to long-term contamination of soil and groundwater. Meanwhile, incineration releases sulfur dioxide, dioxins, and other harmful substances that can easily trigger respiratory infections and health problems in humans, resulting in severe air pollution.

To this end, the environmental pollution caused by plastic tableware has prompted a series of policies—ranging from “plastic restrictions” to “plastic bans”—to be introduced both domestically and internationally. Meanwhile, against the global backdrop of plastic‑free initiatives, the plant‑fiber food‑container sector continues to see the emergence of new products and technologies, presenting substantial opportunities for its development in the next phase.

As one of the categories of plant‑fiber food containers, disposable bamboo‑fiber tableware boasts distinct advantages. For instance, it benefits from abundant resource availability: China ranks first worldwide in both the area of bamboo forests and the richness of bamboo resources, and its bamboo industry is among the most advanced globally. In terms of material properties, bamboo exhibits excellent strength and toughness while requiring a relatively short cultivation cycle. Technologically, the inherent material characteristics of bamboo fiber—high strength and toughness, a favorable wall‑to‑thickness ratio, and an appropriate length‑to‑diameter ratio—combined with simple pre‑treatment methods such as sodium sulfite soaking and steam explosion, enable the production of high‑performance raw materials for bamboo‑fiber food containers.
