China boasts the world’s richest bamboo resources and is often referred to as the “Kingdom of Bamboo.” At present, it is home to more than 40 genera and over 500 species of bamboo, ranking first globally in terms of bamboo genetic diversity, forest area, timber stock, and production. The bamboo industry is a burgeoning sector that integrates ecological, economic, and social benefits. Bamboo is lauded as the “second forest,” and its applications—both domestically and internationally—trace back to ancient times, underscoring its remarkable versatility. With its fine, elongated fibers, bamboo is ideally suited for producing high‑quality pulp. Beyond papermaking, major bamboo products include laminated bamboo panels, bamboo flooring, and various handicrafts. China leads the world in both the variety and scale of bamboo‑based products, which are exported far and wide. During the Tenth Five-Year Plan period, the national bamboo industry experienced rapid growth: bamboo resource areas, product varieties, and output all expanded swiftly; the industry’s overall size grew substantially; and significant progress was made in research and development related to bamboo management, processing, and comprehensive utilization. As a result, the industrialization of bamboo accelerated markedly, establishing it as one of China’s four key emerging industries in forestry. As an integral component of terrestrial forest ecosystems, bamboo plays a vital role in reducing wood consumption, enhancing ecological functions, and boosting rural economies. China ranks first worldwide in both bamboo resource area and production, with a national bamboo forest covering more than 5.2 million hectares. Today, approximately 35 million farmers across the country are directly engaged in bamboo cultivation, bamboo product processing, and related business activities. In recent years, China’s annual bamboo production has remained above 1.2 billion culms, and it is projected to grow modestly in the coming years while maintaining an overall stable trend.
