This is the Vietnam Pavilion at the 2015 Milan Expo, designed by Vo Trong Nghia Architects. Its inspiration stems from the lotus flower, Vietnam’s national emblem, which symbolizes purity, commitment, and optimism for the future. The pavilion comprises several umbrella‑shaped structures clad in bamboo and wood, perched atop a water feature, with plants—specifically lotuses—growing from the pond below, blossoming ever more beautifully. The lotus exemplifies how patience can transform challenges into strengths. Beyond its symbolic meaning, the architects also employ the flower as a metaphor: “Beyond its beauty, the lotus is deeply connected to Vietnamese cuisine. All plants can become delicious food…” As a temporary structure, the architects sought to minimize the pavilion’s environmental footprint. To achieve this, the design makes extensive use of bamboo; notably, the pavilion is also designed for disassembly, allowing its components to be reused. In line with the Expo’s theme, “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life,” the use of renewable bamboo and wood in construction has set a new standard.
